Engine Bay restoration

Preparations

Before I start projects like this i always go about ordering the big stuff first, just to get that out-of-the-way, but only the stuff i know i want to rebuild or completely change out.

The car has now been stationary for a few years, and my Father decided that a very thorough engine and drive drain restoration was needed.

So I took the car down to the car wash and gave it a good rinse, its been sitting for years now and I deserved a bath before I started ripping out its guts.

Got it back in the workshop to dry it out, sorry about the mess, but I was also expanding the workshop with a mezzanine deck, to get more storage and a place to sit and relax.

The following has been decided to be changed completely.

  4. Pads and all small items in the handbrake assembly (Alfaholics)
  5. Complete gearbox rebuild kit (Alfaholics)

So, I finally had some time to spend on the tear down, always the part im dreading every time i do this, nothing is clean and you find all of the “solutions” people before you have done to the car 🙂

All the small stuff came out easy and since im going to steam clean the engine and gearbox before starting any work on it, I took the whole unit out in one piece.untitled (7 of 11)

I also learned that the drive shaft has been “balanced” before, so that needs to be balanced properly and weighted again to reduce vibration and possible fatigue in bearings in both ends og the shaft.

Parts coming off to go thru media blasting, zink plating and surface treatment.

At some point when these cars were worth noting obscure actions were taken sometimes to make aftermarket items fit, like here, where they have used a mallet and made some extra room for aftermarket air filters, that also needs to be fixed.

Found this in my “Rag bag” and found it quite appropriate to use as I tucked in for the night 🙂

Even found time to install some new art in the workshop , Sailor Jerry.
